WHAT IT TAKES TO MAKE A NATIONAL CAMPAIGN LAND: How we turned a love story into a national headline, and how you can too. Not every

Public relations for the retail sector: that is stores, shopping centres and retail developments have a huge benefit beyond other types of businesses for PR; ‘Bricks and Mortar’. Now it may sound old school, but bear with me. Having a premises like a retail destination creates powerful opportunities for in-person PR activations for both media and consumers. And it’s at this intersection of engaging media, influencers and drawing consumers to a destination where the sales magic happens, and desirable brands are created.
Retail is all about creating a brand experience and it can be the platform for powerful PR opportunities.
When we worked with Broadway Shopping Centre to launch Mecca Cosmetica: this showcased the power of PR to draw people through the door. Mecca sits in the penthouse of Broadway Shopping Centre, and while this is desirable in a residential setting, it’s generally the no-man’s land of retail because the foot traffic is so much lower than other levels.
To draw customers up, we created an influencer and social media campaign that saw local Sydney influencers visit the store and publicise it to their followers. We also ran a social media teaser campaign on Broadway’s social media channels to highlight the new retail destination within the centre.
On the launch weekend, the Mecca brand team activated the site with fun prizes, freebies and gifts for shoppers. It was a rip roaring success with lines out the door. It’s this kind of cross-section between online buzz and in person paying customers that’s only really possible with retail PR.
The fact that retail businesses are burdened with challenges is not new news. However, doing retail PR in Sydney comes with its own unique set of challenges including:
However, despite the challenges, there is no better way to create a brand experience, stamp your mark and stand out in the highly competitive Sydney clutter than with a well publicised flagship in Sydney. Being seen in the likes of Louis Vutton or PE Nation makes consumers feel part of a high status community of like-minded people that others aspire to be like.
Identifying your target market and media outlets in retail PR comes down to one thing: who is your customer?
If we are a food and beverage driven precinct in Randwick Sydney, like our client Newmarket Dining, there will be geographic, demographic and behavioural elements of this based on the offer and times of day.
The precinct attracts young families to the oversized playground in the mid mornings, with parents lolling nearby coffee or fresh juice in hand. During the day surrounding workers, mostly from the nearby hospital (one of the main women’s hospitals in Sydney) come searching for a bite to eat. There are also visitors to the hospital like dads-to-be waiting for their partners to give birth. Then there’s hungry teenagers after school grabbing a second lunch on their way home to fuel their growing bodies.
So now we have our market, we are going to start allocating platforms and channels to reaching these people
These are two examples and the same method can be applied to the other target markets. We can then start to think of story angles and PR activations that may appeal to these markets and outlets. It’s then the job of the PR specialist to package that up in a way that makes it sound as exciting as possible so it pops in the inbox of a Sydney media editor.
Events and promotions are a crucial part of any retail PR strategy. They give an opportunity to excite consumers and bring them in the door: to appeal to a fresh market or re-engage an existing one.
There’s a few types of PR-worthy events and promotions that you might like to think about including:
To sum up…
Look, we are a PR and social media agency with a speciality in retail, so our opinion is a little biased, but if you’re in the retail game you NEED to be thinking about PR. You have such a gift in a retail premise to activate, it would be silly not to use it. And if you need a hand, our team is here to help you.
