WHAT IT TAKES TO MAKE A NATIONAL CAMPAIGN LAND: How we turned a love story into a national headline, and how you can too. Not every

Ever wondered what it’s like to work in public relations in Sydney? Well, strap in, because being a PR professional in our vibrant city is fast-pasted and dynamic. While it might sound glamorous – think exclusive events, meeting high-profile influencers, sipping cocktails at media launches – the reality is a bit different. Much of our days are spent hustling behind the scenes, crafting the next big campaign, putting out fires (not literally, but maybe sometimes) and managing a never-ending to-do list. Sure, there are perks and no two days are ever the same which keeps things exciting and is exactly why we love what we do. In this blog, we’ll give you a sneak peek behind the scenes of a typical day in the life at Papaya.
Sydney’s PR industry is brimming with opportunities and challenges. The market is extremely competitive, and brands need PR professionals to help craft campaigns to make them cut through the noise and stand out from the crowd to secure media coverage. As a Sydney PR professional we navigate a complex landscape of balancing clients’ needs and expectations and the realities of the Sydney media scene.
Our days are filled with a mix of strategy, creativity, quick thinking and endless briefing sessions. Papaya mornings start with a team huddle to brainstorm fresh ideas for client campaigns. From there, it’s straight into action, writing press releases, crafting out unique angles for different journalists, securing coverage, and managing client expectations. And let’s not forget the endless stream of follow up emails.
On any given day, we might be organising an event, liaising with influencers, monitoring media coverage or attending photoshoots. There is always something happening and it’s important we keep the momentum going.
With a shrinking media landscape, what’s left is fiercely competitive, fast paced and high pressure with fewer and fewer opportunities for coverage. With so many businesses vying for attention, cutting through the noise is crucial. Lucky for our clients, we’ve got creativity, persistence and top-tier relationships in our toolkit – all part of what we love and what we do so well.
The day typically kicks off with a jolt of caffeine as the Papaya team sets the tone for the day ahead. This often involves a team brainstorm of what’s currently happening in the media, if there are any potential impacts for our clients and how we can adapt on the fly.
We then dive into the day with the best intentions to keep our key priorities and deadlines in mind. But in PR, adaptability is key along with staying calm under pressure (but that’s obvious in this industry). The phone and emails never stop coming through and there’s always colleagues needing something – yesterday.
Despite the challenges, there’s something incredibly rewarding about working in PR in Sydney. The thrill of seeing your campaign make headlines (ring the bell IYKYK) the success of a product launch or the pride of helping your amazing clients -it’s all worth it. You get to be creative, strategic and push boundaries to get your clients noticed.
Plus, our community is tight knit, we find ourselves building relationships and surrounding ourselves with some of the most talented professionals in the business.
A day in the life of a Sydney PR professional is nothing short of exhilarating. It’s a role that demands creativity, resilience and a deep understanding of the media landscape. For those for love a good challenge, it’s one of the most rewarding careers out there.
